The first week we were in town, Sean and I compiled a list of things to do in Amarillo, assuming we’d need to make our own fun in this two-horse town. That wasn’t inaccurate, necessarily, but it turns out there’s actually a lot to do, especially if you enjoy semi-illegal activities, museums, and kitsch. In fact, the summer’s almost gone, and we’ve done maybe half. This coming week, Sean’s last in Amarillo, will be pretty busy, methinks:
LIST OF THINGS TO DO:
-Make a molotov cocktail; throw
-Explore the myriad of abandoned buildings downtown –> Visited the abandoned army base, but not downtown yet
-Go street bowling
-Play horseshoes in the park near the newspaper where we eat dinner everyday
-Visit Palo Duro Canyon
-Get Texas tattoos
-Go to the Iron Skillet (a coworker told us it’s the kind of place that leads to trouble)
-Visit all of Stanley Marsh’s absurdist public art –> Have visited Cadillac Ranch three times, haven’t been to the Floating Mesa yet; also, need a day to scope out all the random signs he’s put up around town
-Chase a tornado
-Visit Roswell
-Visit Santa Fe
-Go to the Sunset Center artist colony
-Eat at the haunted natatorium
-Go to a rodeo
-Go to “World of Wonderland,” a water park north of town –> Yes and no — Went to “World of Wonderland,” an amusement park, but not “Splash Amarillo,” the water park
-Go to Waco and visit Cody, a fellow Dow Jones intern –> He and his family (wife and child) are passing through Amarillo next week. I think that’s as close as we’re going to get.
ADDENDUMS:
-Go to a firing range
-Visit the Quarter Horse Museum
-Visit the Amarillo Museum of Art
-Go to the Amarillo Zoo
-Amarillo Railroad Museum
-Go to a “cowboy poetry” slam session
-Go to a Dillas baseball game
-Go to a drag show at one of the gay clubs
-See the horses parked at Dairy Queen on Sundays
-See a flick at the drive-in movie theater
-Meet Stanley Marsh
-Hang with the “Marsh-ians” who party across the street from the Globe-News
-Waffle Wednesday
-Woody Guthrie folk museum and Freedom Museum USA in Pampa
-Amarillo Botanical Gardens
