My friend Ali threw a New Year’s Eve party where participants were supposed to come dressed as a certain year. Jess, Jessica and this kid Matt (who’s now a good friend of mine, though I didn’t know him at the time) rented 18th-century lords and lady costumes. The outfits being kind of expensive, Jess decided he wanted to get more mileage out of them.

Originally, these photos were going to be part of a show about an unhappily married 18th-century couple who somehow ended up in post-apocalyptic modern America (or something), but it never materialized. Instead, we formulated an even more expansive and ambitious project: The Propaganda Project.

A Very Merry “F Street” Christmakkuh

There’s an area of Lincoln south of the capitol building known as the Core, or the South Bottoms, where a mix of lower-income families, college students and twenty- and thirtysomethings live. Personally, I adore the neighborhood; there are certain streets you don’t want to walk down alone at night, to be sure, and every now and then you hear about violence and/or other crimes, but that’s no different than any other urban area. And on the flip side, people are so willing to share, even if they don’t have much. There’s a deep sense of community, which for me is what makes the neighborhood so compelling. House shows, free community classes (ie: my friend Dene teaches yoga in a park), yard sales, potlucks, clothing exchanges, block parties … I love living in this part of town.

And coincidentally, most of my friends in the area all lived on F Street this past winter (Lincoln streets downtown are numbers and letters). Kyle, Lauren and I were living at 15th and F; three good friends live next door; Andy and Angie are the next block down; Spencer and Steve lived two blocks down from that; and Lara and Kibbie were across the street and down a few houses from them, to name a few.

So for the holidays, we had an “F Street Awkward Family Photo Shoot.”

Hear Nebraska fundraiser

OK. So. I’ve fallen terribly, terribly behind on this blog. I realize that. (Like six months behind.) Bearing that in mind, the posts catching up to the present will have much less dialogue and commentary than usual … partially because then I can post them faster and easier, and partially because I simply don’t remember particular witticisms or discussions. ;)

These are from a fundraiser held at the Bourbon Theatre in Lincoln for Hear Nebraska, a non-profit multiplatform social media-y website devoted to all things music-related in Nebraska. It’s Andy and Angie’s baby, and since it launched in January, I’ve been doing a column called X-Rated: Women in Music. I do a weekly women-in-music events calendar (like this), write occasional stories as time permits (like this) and post podcasts from my KZUM radio show when I have live studio guests (like this).

Hear Nebraska is young, but I think the site/organization have the potential to do amazing things for music in the state and the region. Check it out.

It’s actually pretty sad to be posting these, because in two weeks, I’ll be having my own move-in party in one of the other three apartments in Ellie’s building … but in about five weeks, Ellie’s moving to New York to attend the French Culinary Institute.

I’m really going to miss that girl. And her delicious, delicious food.
